Obsidian Decorative Vase

The piece

A ring of dark earth. The body opens at its centre, letting light pass straight through, and rises into a single looped handle, like an ancient vessel reduced to its outline.

The surface is left matte and raw, its grainy texture closer to volcanic stone than to polished ceramic. Hand-shaped, so no two pieces are exactly alike.

Details

  • Finish: matte black, rough mineral texture
  • Form: open ring body, looped handle, turned foot
  • Use: decorative object. Dried stems or left empty, as a sculpture.

Design

Fatallah Benaouidat

Franco-Moroccan designer

His pieces are not reproduced. They are handed down.

Fatallah Benaouidat draws in France. His pieces take shape in Morocco. Between the two shores, a conversation that has never fallen silent.

From modern art he keeps the line that is enough. From literature, the weight of every word. And from the houses of the land of his roots, a silence he slips into every piece, one that turns an object into a work.

Each drawing then travels to seven artisans, from one end of Morocco to the other, keepers of gestures older than he is. He gives the form. They give it weight, grain, light: what no drawing can do.

The artisans

Seven artisans, across Morocco.

Casarin works with a close circle of seven master artisans, each devoted to one material and one gesture. Lime, earth, glaze, wood, leather and glass: every piece passes through their hands, at their pace.
